COLOSTRUM: WHAT IT IS & WHY IT MATTERS

Welcoming a newborn comes with many firsts and one of the most important is colostrum. Often referred to as “liquid gold,” colostrum is the first milk produced by a mother’s body after delivery. It is thick, yellowish in color, and released in small amounts, but don’t let the quantity fool you. Colostrum is packed with powerful nutrients and antibodies that give your baby the healthiest possible start.

Colostrum plays a vital role in building your baby’s immune system. It contains high levels of antibodies that help protect newborns from early infections and illnesses. Many healthcare professionals call colostrum a baby’s “first vaccine” because it provides natural protection during the earliest and most vulnerable days of life.

Beyond immunity, colostrum also supports your baby’s digestive system. A newborn’s gut is still developing, and colostrum helps coat and protect the intestinal lining, making it easier for babies to digest milk and absorb nutrients. It also helps your baby pass their first stool which can reduce the risk of jaundice.

Many new moms worry when they see only a few drops of colostrum, but this is completely normal. A newborn’s stomach is incredibly small, roughly the size of a marble, so the amount of colostrum produced is perfectly tailored to meet their early needs. These early feeds also signal your body to begin producing mature milk in the days that follow.

Colostrum is typically available during the first one to three days after birth, before mature milk comes in. Some mothers may notice colostrum leaking during late pregnancy, which is also normal. To help your baby receive colostrum effectively, it’s recommended to practice skin-to-skin contact immediately after delivery, begin breastfeeding during the golden hour, and feed your baby on demand.

Most importantly, trust your body. Every breastfeeding journey is different, and it’s natural to feel unsure at the beginning. Try not to stress if your milk supply seems low colostrum is enough to nourish and protect your baby during those first precious days. If you experience challenges or feel overwhelmed, seek support from healthcare professionals or a lactation consultant.

Colostrum may come in small amounts, but its impact is powerful. It is a mother’s first gift to her baby, laying the foundation for a healthy start in life.
